Accessibility
We want every reader to be able to read and move around The Dalit Project, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, zoom or other assistive technology. We treat this as ongoing work, not a box ticked once. This page covers the website only, not our social media accounts.
What we're working towards
Our goal is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The site is built with that in mind:
- a "Skip to content" link at the top of every page;
- menus, search and forms designed to work with a keyboard;
- headings and landmarks that give pages a structure screen readers can follow;
- text descriptions for images, and key figures from the charts in our data pieces repeated in the text;
- plain tables and downloadable data behind our trackers, not only charts;
- layouts designed to reflow on small screens and when you zoom in.
Where we are now
We don't yet know whether the site fully meets WCAG 2.2 AA. It hasn't had an independent audit or any testing with a screen reader. On 29 September 2026 we ran an automated check (axe) on 12 of our main page types, on desktop and phone screen sizes, and fixed everything it found:
- text with too little contrast on a button and on chart labels;
- an image link with no name for screen readers;
- a page without a main heading, and a heading out of order;
- data tables that couldn't be scrolled with a keyboard;
- two menus with the same name, and links too small to tap easily on a phone.
Automated checks catch only some problems. Known limits we're still working on:
- No screen-reader or full keyboard testing yet.
- Articles published before September 2026 may have weaker image descriptions.
- The newsletter email box in the footer is named for screen readers but has no visible label.
- Wide data tables need sideways scrolling on a phone.
- We publish in English only for now.
Tell us about a problem
If something doesn't work for you, such as a page your screen reader can't make sense of, a control you can't reach by keyboard, or text that's hard to read, please tell us through our contact form. Say which page, what you were trying to do and what happened, and, if you like, what device and assistive technology you use. Tell us too if you need a piece in another form, and we'll work with you to find a way.
