Abhijeet Dipke's Dalit Identity Disclosure and Caste-Based Backlash

2026-05-21

On May 21, 2026, Abhijeet Dipke, the 30-year-old founder of the Cockroach Janta Party and a public relations student at Boston University, publicly disclosed his Dalit identity via a post on X (formerly Twitter). The disclosure came in response to a user named Shut Up Counsel who challenged Dipke to clarify the party's stance on Dalit issues and reservation policies. Dipke replied simply: "I am a Dalit myself. I hope that will answer all your questions."

The Cockroach Janta Party had emerged as a satirical political movement in response to remarks made by Chief Justice Surya Kant referring to unemployed Indian youth as "cockroaches" and "parasites." The movement had gained significant traction among Gen Z audiences on social media, and Dipke's identity disclosure sparked immediate backlash.

Within hours of his disclosure, Dipke faced coordinated caste-based harassment from multiple social media accounts. Users accused him of "playing the Dalit card" to advance political ambitions, with critics claiming his focus on caste issues contradicted principles of merit. Other attackers mocked his political viability, with comments such as "You want to become PM with -40 votes?" The harassment demonstrated how persistent caste prejudice remains, even in spaces ostensibly focused on youth activism and political reform.

Despite the attacks, Dipke continued to develop CJP as a digital-first political initiative aimed at encouraging young people to engage in civic participation through awareness campaigns and Right to Information (RTI) applications. The incident highlighted broader tensions within Indian digital spaces around identity, privilege, and the right of Dalit individuals to claim their social position without harassment.
